Thousands of tattoo designs are available on websites and in catalogues waiting to be selected. Tattoos in general are becoming more popular these days and it is tribal Polynesian designs that are becoming increasingly more common.

Polynesian tattoo designs come in two specific and different types, The first of these is known as Etua. A spiritual and religious significance is tied to the Etua. Some symbols are said to be magic and will keep one safe from the wrath of the gods. The type of design known as Enata can be thought of as characterizing a person with their identity and status. This consists of their social standard, the island they come from, place of employment and past events.

Symbols within Polynesian tattoo designs and their meaning are as follows -

Shark teeth – Sharks' teeth tattoos are for protection.

The turtle is a universal icon of longevity and fruitfulness.

Shells – Shells are a symbol of prosperity to the Polynesian people and it is possible that they were used as the earliest form of currency.

Sharks designs are a symbol that is very sacred. Polynesian shark tattoos are used as a symbol of protection from threats.

Gecko – It is believed that the gecko has powers of a supernatural nature and are feared but also held in awe by the Polynesians. One type of superstition is that a green gecko laughing will bring bad luck and poor health.

Tiki – The god Tiki is often shown with eyes closed. This is because Tiki is able to smell trouble before it is seen.

The Polynesian island inhabitants are wide spread. Their cultures include popular places are Samoa, Cook Islands, Easter Island, Tahiti, French Polynesia, Tonga, as well as Hawaii. The people across these islands developed into their own distinct cultures over thousands of years. However what is fascinating is the cultural similarities that developed especially in the practice of tattoo artistry. Well Polynesian tattoos of today don't mean much today if anything people love them only for their design rather than magical protection or a status statement.
