Traditional Tattoo designs are often referred to as old school tattoo designs. They are usually very plain, bold and very much graphically-oriented. Traditional designs are known to have thicker black lines, different shadings of black and usually have just a tiny bit of color or no color at all. You could basically say that the Traditional tattoos do not have much color and are a bit darker. Colors are used in blocks with very few details. The older tattoos are always in two dimensional because three dimensional designs are really something from the new age. This traditional tattoo designs feature traces its roots back to 1900s, when it was widespread having simple graphic symbols reproduced on skin cheaply and quickly, with limited equipment at the artists’ disposal. Because mainly soldiers and sailors were getting tattoos done back in the days when tattoos were less popular, most of the old school motives have army and navy motives. Today, those artists who practice traditional tattoo designs, in order to have their work considered as truly traditional, have to adhere to some very distinct and specific set of visual rules. The above mentioned rules mainly apply on the visual aspects of the tattoo like the colors and theme of the tattoo. Many traditional artists use work from great old school tattoo artists like Don Ed Hardy and Lyle Tuttle as the basis for their designs. This is why there are so many traditional tattoo designs which are directly copied from a sheet which is prepared in order to allow mass replication.
If you are interested in a true traditional tattoo then you should make sure that you are getting a tattoo which really meets the standards of a traditional tattoo. Make sure to pick a great tattoo artist that is capable of making real traditional tattoos and is familiar with all the rules of traditional tattoos. If you or your tattoo artist acts to reckless you might end up with a false or knock off tattoo. It could be that you just want a great tattoo and don’t care about the tradition of certain tattoos. One of the latest and newest aspects of traditional tattoo designs is the so-called “neo-traditional” tattoo genre, which has grew in popularity in recent years. The neo-traditional tattoo is made by combining the rules of the traditional tattoos and some modern techniques and tools. This often results in a very impressive and much more diverse hybrid design. To give an example, a tattoo performed in a neo-traditional style, may still have simplified shapes and fat black outlines and characteristic for the traditional practice, while also introducing much broader color palette and some unusual, modern theme or motive. This neo-traditional tattoo style presents a great compromise for a person who appreciates the aspects of both styles and is torn between the modern and traditional themes.
