The Controversy following Spiritual Tattoos

May 26th, 2009 by | Print

A lot of people are fascinated with spiritual tattoos. Religious images are commonly used as tattoo designs. Many spiritual tattoos are done in color with great detail that will amaze you.

Religious groups, specially the Catholic Church, voice out their displeasure when religious pictures are used as tattoo designs. The religion teaches its followers that the body is a temple of Christ and should not be vandalized. A tattoo is also something unnatural and is deemed as something unsightly.

There is a passage in the Bible that plainly points out "You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD." (Leviticus 19:28)

The current culture of today believe that the scripture verse that finds tattooing as breaking God's law is an old law and does not relate to today's world. The scripture was referring to those people who scar and wound their bodies as a sacrificial ritual for a deceased family member.

The cross of Jesus Christ is one of the most common religious symbols used as a tattoo. The symbol of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, The Passion of Christ and the Virgin Mother Mary are other popular examples religious tattoos.

Aside from the fact that religious pictures are very attractive in terms of design, they are also very dramatic and can symbolize a person's religious advocacy.

For a person who has an image of Christ or other religious design tattooed on his body, it surely has a great ethical and spiritual importance to his life. Faith can really turn a person's life around and in their devotion to the spiritual force that change their path, a religious tattoo could help show their faith and their gratitude to the Lord God.

Although there is a huge, giant debate whether religious tattoos are sinful or not, it has been a variety of self-expression to a lot of people. Some people find tattoos as a tool on how they can express their belief. And even though the religious conservatives would object to it, many people still are admirers of this type of tattoo.

Even with the controversy related to religious images used as tattoos, it still has been one of the more popular options in tattoo designs. First time wearers would often choose a religious tattoo. There is a certain glory in wearing a religious tattoo.
