The Maori people are the indigenous people that live in New Zealand, and are orignially Polynesian by race. It's believed they arrived in the Polynesian islands first in the 1300s, settling in and around the islands and then developing their own unique and distinct culture and ways of life. The arrival of Europeans in Polynesia in the 1700s dramatically disrupted Maori life and led to the gradual decline of the Maori tribes through the 1800s. But many aspects of Maori culture have actually become very popular and undergone a kind of popular revival over the last 40 years, all around the world.

This is particularly the case with Maori tattoo designs, which have become immensely popular in many different countries. This is inpart because Maori tattoos are unique visually and in meaning.
